The Nevada Library Association recognizes concerns
regarding access to the Internet. The use of Internet filters to prevent
such access has been widely suggested but poses many problems for
libraries.
Filters can block valuable information, thus
preventing a library from fulfilling one of its prime missions, and
may prove unconstitutional in public institutions.
Filters are not an effective safeguard against
websites that may be considered objectionable.
Alternatives to filters include Acceptable Use
Policies, installation of privacy screens, and library-provided
links to particular sites that have been recommended for children.
The Nevada Library Association does not
recommend the use of Internet filters in libraries.
The Nevada Library Association emphatically
opposes attempts by federal, state, and local governments to mandate
the use of filters.
The Nevada Library Association believes that
decisions regarding the use of the Internet must remain with local
boards.
