10:00 – 11:30 - Keynote Speaker, Cindy Wigen, Public Services Manager & Associate. Director, Whitman County Library, Colfax, Washington http://www.whitco.lib.wa.us/.
“The Little Library That Could”—from when we had a revolving door of directors and nearly zero in reserves to our present situation of success and prominence in our community. Mentioned on the College of DuPage Library Marketing teleconference, Cindy Wigen will talk about Whitman County Library coming out of the “dark days”, turning themselves around by forming community partnerships, and how to get Bill Gates to come to your library – in person!
Cindy Wigen is the Public Services Manager and Associate Director of the Whitman County Library, a rural system serving a population of 15,500 tucked in the southeast corner of Washington State. The main branch is located in Colfax with 12 small branches in surrounding communities with populations between 300-700 residents.
She started 14 years ago as a branch manager, followed by 7 years as youth services coordinator and found her niche in promoting WCL for the past 5 years. She has a B.A in Humanities with Communications/Psychology emphasis, has served on the Washington Sate Library’s Marketing Initiative Committee for the past 2 years and was selected Washington State Library Employee of the Year for 2003.

11:45 – 12:45: Box Lunch and Presentation by Luise Davis, Douglas County Library. “The Great Marketing Adventure”: The making of a promotional library video using community volunteers, staff and a paid videographer. Includes presentation of 34 minute video.

1:00 – 2:30 - Workshops
Rural Libraries – Marketing Your Rural Library (Part I): “Marketing Begins with a State of Mind and Ends with a Story” with Cindy Wigen, Public Services Manager & Associate Director, Whitman County Library in southeastern Washington state and Maranne Thieme, Lyon County Central Branch Library, Yerington, Nevada. These two passionate public library service managers will team up to share tips, techniques and strategies for working smarter, not harder at marketing and promotion of your rural library. Visibility is the key and this workshop will help you get started by building an effective and successful marketing plan for your library.

Urban Libraries –Working with the Media. Robert Harmon, Public Information Office, Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space. The first step in working with the media, is understanding the media.

Academic & Special Libraries – Creating and Marketing a Specialized Multilingual Open Access Database. Kathryn Etcheverria and Donnelyn Curtis, University of Nevada, Reno, Basque Library. This session will focus on the experience of publicizing the Basque Database created at UNR with a grant from NEH. The presenters will also briefly cover and answer questions about applying for the grant, adjusting the plan, and carrying out the two-year project.

2:30 – 4:00 – Mini-sessions
Marketing the Library and Staying Sane: Jeanne Munk, Pershing County Library
Pershing County Library is marketing the library to new, existing and old patrons to help them re-discover their library. The library has entered into partnership with several organizations to reach this goal: the local PBS K14Kq graphics department to develop a brochure and flyer; Even Start Spanish speaking student to translation materials into Spanish; the University of Phoenix Marketing 421 Learning Team A to develop future marketing ideas for the county’s Hispanic population; and the use of the resources of the Chamber of Commerce to help distribute the flyer through the mail.

Marketing Project for Esmeralda County Libraries: Pat Wright, Pershing County Library Trustee; A Marketing Plan created and implemented for the Esmeralda County Libraries
Marketing Your Rural Library (Part II): “Starting From Scratch Without Scratch” with Maranne Thieme, Lyon County Central Branch Library, Yerington, Nevada and Cindy Wigen, Whitman County Library, Colfax, Washington.

Learn how to create programs on a low-to-no budget, inventing library celebrations that highlight existing collections, develop new interest in the library with service club speaking engagements, building library-community partnerships that bring new people into the library, and tips on writing news releases, briefs and public service announcements that tickle the reader’s curiosity. This workshop will help library systems without a public relations staff to work effectively with local media.

Marketing Your Library With a Health Fair: Elaine Wing and Paul Gardner, LV-CCLD;
Marketing your library with an annual health fair is easy and economical and is excellent for good public relations. Provided in this program are some easy to follow steps designed to help you create a successful health fair of your own. You will walk away from this program with the confidence and information you need to give a successful health fair no matter where your library is located in Nevada.

Marketing Your Library through Special Events: Session presented by Sharon Honig-Bear, Development Officer, Washoe County Library; basket assistance by Shirie Wallace, Susan Bruno and Charlotte Voitoff, members of the Friends of Washoe County Library

Want to attract BIG attention to your library? Consider special events or programs. This session will help you clarify the purpose of your activity ("friend raiser" or fund raiser), how to make your event a "signature" event for your library and how to open new markets through special events. The session will culminate with a creative session in which thematic baskets will be assembled, for auction at the dinner which follows.

Please bring some items that could be used in baskets with a Romance/Relaxation theme; a Nevada theme; or a Christmas theme.
