(President's Message, continued)

dear to my heart. My Presidential project was to insure adequate funding for this valuable program now and in the future. This goal would have never been possible without the tremendous support the Association received from Monte Hightower, the State Librarian, and the very personal commitment from several vendors. At the annual conference, NLA awarded $17,000 in scholarship awards to seven NLA members. Monte Hightower committed $15,000 of LSTA funding towards the project.  Larry Tinker and Fred Warren of Grolier Educational and Tim Walsh of Children’s Plus, inc. each personally donated $1,000.00 towards the scholarship fund. I pledge to continue to work on this project to insure adequate financial support for members pursuing library education opportunities.

Finally, as President I had the opportunity to help honor a number of people who were retiring from their library positions this year. At my President’s Dinner we honored five past Presidents of the organization who had retired or were retiring in 2000.  These retirees included Chuck Manley (1989), Lynn Ossolinski (1990), Karen Albrethson (1995), Sally Kinsey (1997), and Bonnie Buckley (1999). In addition, we honored Monte Hightower who retired as our State Librarian and the Administrator of the Nevada State Library and Archives in November.

I know of two other NLA members who also retired from their positions in 2000 - Myoung-ja Lee Kwon and Pat Beaman. Myoung-ja Lee Kwon served in a variety of capacities at the University of Nevada Las Vegas Libraries for over thirty years. She was an active member of NLA through many of the years she was at UNLV, and she made several presentations at NLA conferences. Pat Beaman, who retired from Southside School in Elko at the end of the school year in 2000, was a loyal member of NLA who attended conferences and served on many committees. All of these people deserve our thanks for their dedication to Nevada libraries and our encouragement to continue their contribution to our Association, through their continued active participation.

I would like to thank all the people who helped me make this year a success. My husband gave me lots of encouragement and help along the way. I received tremendous support from members of my staff, who said yes to everything I asked of them and contributed greatly to making my year as President a success .The Executive Board was a pleasure to work with. Each and every person elected or appointed truly did a wonderful job and contributed in so many ways to our organization’s health and well-being and to making my year as President a great experience. The vendors who support the Nevada Library Association were also truly wonderful in their generosity.

In closing, thank you to each member of NLA.  I am so proud to be part of this organization and I am truly thankful for the opportunity you provided me.

Sara Jones

2000 President, NLA

"Reading Road Trip USA"

Co-op Summer

Reading Program 2001

Training Workshop in Tonopah

March 2-3, 2001

Text Box:

"ARE WE THERE YET?" That's the question that will be posed by a puppet show to be presented this March 2nd and 3rd in Tonopah for Nevada's librarians. Chris, Darla and Danita Bayer will present the puppet show and preview a CD of the same title for next summer's library reading program on the theme of "Reading Road Trip USA."

Chris and Darla Bayer have performed original songs and puppet shows across northern Nevada for the last ten years. Last year's summer reading theme, "READiscover Nevada", saw them presenting their play "Why Does the Coyote Yodel?" For those of you who missed that show, the answer is that he was "looking for the perfect echo." Their website of music, living history and books can be found at nevadamusic.com.

This year's show and songs will again emphasize audience participation. The lyrics and chords of the songs will be included on the CD in a text file. Librarians will find it easy to include music as part of the summer reading program.
