Workshops for Libraries and Archives
Jeffrey M. Kintop, State Archives Manager

The
Nevada Museums Association is sponsoring two workshops on electronic imaging
for Nevada libraries, museums and archives.
An "Introduction to Imaging and Imaging
Technology in Libraries and Archives" will be held in Las Vegas on
January 22-23, 2001, at the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society,
and in Carson City on January 25-26, 2001, at
the Nevada State Library and Archives.
The workshops will be presented by
Bill Walker of Amigos Preservation Services, a non-profit, grant-funded
service that provides preservation information, support and training to
librarians and archivists in the Southwestern U.S. Walker specializes in technical
training and conducts digital imaging training for Amigos. This workshop
provides an overview of digital imaging, and gives a concrete demonstration of
the technology and process of imaging.
Participants in this two-day workshop will learn about how to select appropriate materials for imaging, guidelines and benchmarks for image quality, file formats, headers and compression. There will be a hands-on introduction to digital imaging hardware, software, and storage media and devices. Participants will also compare different technologies and workstation configurations; examine workflow and outsourcing conversion issues; and explore search and retrieval, indexing, metadata and image networking.
Funding
for this workshop was made available through grants from the State Historical
Records Advisory Board and the Nevada Libraries Continuing Education Advisory
Committee. Amigos Imaging and
Preservation Services are funded in part by a grant from the Division of
Preservation and Access of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
