The University of Nevada, Reno seeks an experienced library administrator to serve as Senior Director of Libraries to oversee library operations in the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, the Savitt Medical Library, and the DeLaMare Library for earth and physical sciences and engineering. Reporting to the Vice President for Information Technology/Dean of Libraries, the Senior Director has an opportunity to shape programs, strategic directions, and service initiatives in a collaborative library and information technology environment.

In the summer of 2008, the university opened the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, one of the most technologically advanced libraries in the country. Library and IT professionals work together to integrate technology and resources and develop services for over 16,000 students. The new facility and organizational structure create an ideal environment for shared projects and service initiatives. The Senior Director provides leadership and direction for the general administration of the Libraries. The person in this key position is responsible for strategic visioning and planning, policy and program development, assessment, marketing, and the overall excellence and vitality of library services.

The incumbent will:

  • lead, inspire, and manage personnel in the fulfillment of the Libraries’ vision and mission
  • take a leadership role in the adaptation and integration of leading edge technologies
  • oversee the development of transformational and effective user-centered services
  • develop programs to support the curriculum through active collaboration with university faculty
  • develop the Libraries’ role in the educational mission through campus partnerships focused on 1st year experience, integration of media literacy principles into the curriculum, and other initiatives
  • facilitate the transition to a learning organization
  • develop effective assessment tools, strategies, and a program to ensure continuous assessment
  • facilitate strategic planning
  • manage marketing and communication for the Libraries
  • maintain the library as a user-friendly, technologically sophisticated social and intellectual hub
  • maintain professional knowledge in relevant fields, including developments in information technology and instructional media and their relationship to the library as a teaching and learning resource
  • serve on Library and IT Management groups, working closely with other senior leaders to ensure quality services and collections

Required qualifications: ALA accredited MLS and seven years of professional library experience in progressively responsible positions, including management and supervision of faculty and staff. The successful candidate will be an accomplished leader who is skilled in managing change and building partnerships within and across departments and campus. The successful candidate will have:

  • outstanding communication and interpersonal skills with diverse groups
  • an understanding of trends in higher education as they affect library services
  • an understanding of concepts and strategies for re-tooling and development of a learning organization
  • strong writing skills
  • potential to meet requirements for UNR tenure and promotion

Salary $100,000s, DOE. TIAA/CREF and other retirement options; 24 vacation days per year; generous sick leave. No state income tax or FICA. Tuition benefits for self and family.
The University of Nevada, Reno is the land-grant university and major research institution in the state. Reno is a metropolitan area of 410,000, on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, minutes from California and 38 miles from Lake Tahoe. In 295,000 square feet, the beautiful facility offers hi-tech research, production, presentation, and collaborative spaces, with traditional reading rooms, and comfortable staff and service areas. The Knowledge Center is home to several computer labs, art displays, a 163 seat auditorium, a coffee shop, smart classrooms, and media production areas.
