A Message from Presenter
Pat Wagner to Trustees,
Foundation Boards, Friends Boards, and Administrators
This is Pat
Wagner; I wanted to let you know a little bit about the
program I will be presenting at NLA/MPLA this fall. Because of the
work
I do with elected and appointed officials in small communities
through
our region, I have been looking into the history of local
government
and how it applies to what happens in library boards, county
commissions, city councils, nonprofit boards. For example, when we
make a new policy, do we respond to existing situations or
anticipate problems? These two
points of view have roots going back hundreds of years, and both
approaches have benefits and costs.
The good news is that there is already a very rich body of
information,
including some very practical guidelines with hundreds of years of
evidence, to help us do a better job of making decisions on behalf
of
the people and institutions we serve. I have presented versions of
this
information while working with library boards through the United
States
with excellent responses.
Are you interested in improving the way your library's leadership
makes
decisions? Looking to inspire trustees to think about the bigger
picture and act on behalf of the whole community, not just the
people
they agree with? Wanting better words to explain to your staff and
community why the board has the right to make the decisions it
makes
(that they did not just make up the idea of a constitutional
republic
to control the town's finances?) And wanting to improve relations
with
the other governing organizations in your community, include
nonprofits
like your Friends group?
You don't need a law degree or a background
in political science to
enjoy the session. Hope to see you there.
